Healthy Camping Meals: Easy Food for Every Trip

Healthy Camping Meals: Easy Food for Every Trip

Camp food has a reputation problem. People assume it's either two-minute noodles or an elaborate camp oven roast that takes three hours. Neither is necessary.

The Meal Prep Principle

The best thing you can do for camp food happens before you leave home.

Before you leave:

  • Chop all vegetables and store in labelled ziplock bags
  • Marinate meat in its cooking bag
  • Pre-mix dry ingredients for pancakes or spice blends
  • Portion snacks into daily bags
  • Freeze meals for day two or three (they act as ice packs)

Cooler Management

Food Standards Australia recommends keeping perishable food below 5°C.

  • Use ice bricks, not loose ice
  • Pack in order of use: last day on bottom, first day on top
  • Open the esky as little as possible
  • Keep it in shade
  • Pre-chill everything before it goes in

No-Cook Meals

Perfect for arrival night or total fire ban days.

Wraps. Tortillas, deli meat or tinned tuna, pre-chopped salad, hummus. Two minutes, no dishes.

Cheese and crackers board. Hard cheese lasts well in a cooler. Add dried fruit, nuts, deli meats.

Cold pasta salad. Make at home the night before. Keeps in the cooler for two days.

Overnight oats. Oats, milk, chia seeds, honey, fruit. Mix in a jar the night before.

One-Pot Camp Dinners

Camp chilli. Brown mince, add tinned tomatoes, tinned beans, pre-mixed spice blend. Simmer 15 minutes.

Pasta with sauce. Boil pasta, add a jar of sauce and pre-chopped vegetables. Total time: 12 minutes.

Fried rice. Pre-cooked rice from home, fry with eggs, soy sauce, vegetables. Ten minutes.

Soup. Pre-made and frozen at home, reheated at camp. Serve with buttered bread rolls.

Campfire and BBQ Meals

If fires are permitted (check at BOM and your state parks authority):

Foil packets. Protein, vegetables, seasoning. Wrap tightly. Coals or BBQ for 15-20 minutes. Each person makes their own. Zero shared dishes.

Damper. Self-raising flour, salt, water. Wrap around a stick, cook over coals. Add cheese and herbs for savoury, honey and cinnamon for sweet.

Jaffle iron toasties. Bread, cheese, tinned spaghetti. Three minutes over coals. The definitive camp meal.

Sample Three-Day Menu

Breakfast Overnight oats Pancakes Eggs and toast
Lunch Wraps with deli meat Cold pasta salad Cheese and crackers
Dinner Foil packets on BBQ One-pot camp chilli Fried rice

Food Safety at Camp

  • Two-hour rule. Perishable food out of the cooler for more than two hours in warm weather should be thrown away.
  • Separate raw and cooked. Raw meat in sealed bags at the bottom of the cooler.
  • Wash hands before cooking. Hand sanitiser at minimum.
  • Don't leave food out overnight. Animals will find it.
